AC repair in Enugu: how to choose a technician
Choose an AC technician who diagnoses before touching anything, quotes parts, labour and gas in writing, and tests the unit with you before you pay in full.
For AC repair in Enugu, choose a technician who will tell you what is wrong before touching anything, put the price for parts, labour and any gas in writing, and test the unit with you before you pay in full. Ask a neighbour or your estate group who they have used, check the fault yourself first so you can describe it clearly, and be wary of anyone whose answer to every problem is "it needs gas".
Below are the faults you are most likely to see, the difference between servicing and repair, what you can check yourself, and the questions that separate a careful technician from a guesser.
Common AC faults and what they usually mean
Home ACs come in two common forms: split units, with an indoor unit on the wall and an outdoor unit outside, and window units, which sit in one box through the wall. The same faults turn up in both:
- Running but not cooling. Often a dirty filter or dirty coils. It can also be a refrigerant leak, a weak capacitor, or an outdoor fan that has stopped.
- Water dripping from the indoor unit. Usually a blocked drain pipe, a filter so dirty that the coil freezes and then melts, or a unit that wasn't mounted level.
- Ice on the pipes or the indoor coil. Poor airflow from dirt, or low refrigerant because of a leak.
- Bad smell when it starts. Mould and dust inside the indoor unit. It needs a proper clean, not air freshener.
- Clicks, then nothing, or it trips the breaker. An electrical fault: the capacitor, the wiring, or the compressor. Switch it off and get it checked.
- Loud rattling or grinding. A loose panel, a damaged fan blade or a worn motor. Leaving it can turn a small repair into a big one.
- A code flashing on the display. Write it down with the brand and model. A good technician will look up what it means for that unit.

Servicing or repair: which do you need?
Servicing is routine care for a unit that works. A proper service means cleaning or washing the filters, the indoor coil and the outdoor unit, clearing the drain line, tightening electrical connections, and checking that the unit is cooling and drawing current as it should. Your user manual says how often the maker recommends it.
Repair is fixing a specific fault, such as replacing a capacitor, a fan motor or a control board, or finding and sealing a leak. If your AC still cools but less well than before, start with a service. If it won't start, trips the breaker or makes new noises, you need a diagnosis and a repair.
Harmattan matters here. The dry, dusty months clog filters and outdoor coils much faster than the rainy season, so check the filter more often then and plan a service when the dust settles.

What you can check before you call anyone
- Look at the filter. Open the front cover of the indoor unit. If the mesh filter is grey with dust, slide it out, rinse it with clean water, let it dry fully and put it back.
- Check the power. Is the breaker on, is the stabiliser or surge protector working, and is the voltage steady? Low voltage alone can stop a compressor from starting.
- Look at the outdoor unit. Its fan should spin when the AC is cooling. Clear leaves, bags or anything blocking it.
- Note the details. Brand, model, how old it is, the exact symptom and any error code. Take a short video of the problem.
Stop there. Don't open the outdoor unit or touch the wiring yourself. Capacitors can hold a charge even when the power is off.
The truth about "AC gas"
An AC doesn't use up its refrigerant the way a car uses fuel. The gas circulates in a sealed system. If it is low, there is a leak somewhere, and topping it up without fixing the leak means you will be paying for gas again soon.
A careful technician will find the leak first, often at the joints where the pipes connect, repair it, and then check the pressure before refilling. They should use the type of refrigerant written on the unit's rating plate, never mix types, and be able to show you the gauges. If someone wants to "add gas" without checking anything, find someone else.
Questions to ask an AC technician in Enugu
Ask these on the phone or at the first visit. A good technician will be glad you asked.
- What exactly is wrong, and how did you find out? Ask them to show you the faulty part.
- Can I have the quote in writing? On WhatsApp is fine. It should list parts, labour and any refrigerant separately.
- Is the part new or fairly used? Both can be fine, but you should know which one you are paying for.
- Will you test it with me before you leave? Run the unit together for a while and check that it cools and drains properly.
- What happens if the same fault comes back? Agree in writing whether they will return to look at it again, and for how long.
- For a new installation, do you bring a vacuum pump and gauges? Air and moisture left in the pipes shorten an AC's life.
A technician based near you, in Independence Layout, Trans-Ekulu or wherever you live, is easier to call back if something goes wrong. If the problem is your house wiring or frequent tripping, you may need an electrician as well. Our guide to hiring an electrician covers what to ask.
Paying for the work
Agree the price before work starts and pay by bank transfer so you have a record. For a bigger job, such as a new installation or a compressor change, pay in stages rather than all upfront, and keep the old parts if you want to see what was replaced.
If you hire through OgaLanLord, you can make a booking or a job. A booking is a free scheduling request, and you agree payment directly with the technician. A job is protected by escrow: you fund it, OgaLanLord holds the money, the artisan submits proof of the work, and you approve it to release payment or raise a dispute if something is wrong.
You can split a job into stages, so each part is paid only when you approve it. If you neither approve nor dispute before the deadline on the job page, payment is released automatically, so test the AC in time. Jobs carry a platform service fee, shown before you pay. See how hiring and escrow work.
